Chasing Colors: Where to Find Florida’s Fall Foliage

Chasing Colors: Where to Find Florida’s Fall Foliage

by | Oct 6, 2025

It may seem surprising to discuss fall foliage in Florida, a state more renowned for its sunshine and beaches. However, our autumn offers a unique and charming experience for those who know where to look. While Florida may not boast the dramatic, widespread color displays of mountainous regions, our fall foliage season does arrive, typically kicking off in early to mid-November.

Weather’s Role in Florida’s Fall Colors

Weather patterns can influence the intensity of these colors; even a few colder-than-average days can significantly enhance the display. You can expect to see beautiful hues of yellows, oranges, and reds, sometimes with a surprising splash of purple. However, because Florida has a large number of evergreen trees, our fall colors tend to appear more sporadically, dotting the landscape rather than blanketing it.

Florida’s Unique Autumn Beauty

Florida’s fall foliage is a special kind of beauty, a gentle transition rather than a loud spectacle. The cooler mornings that finally arrive in early to mid-October are the gentle nudge that our trees need to start their colorful show. It’s this shift in temperature, particularly the cooler nights, that signals the change. Some years are indeed more brilliant than others, especially when we get a few days that feel genuinely chilly. When these conditions align, the leaves put on a lovely performance, showcasing the characteristic yellows, oranges, and reds that are so characteristic of our unique autumn. Even though palms and firs are abundant, making our fall more of a scattered delight, the deciduous trees that do change offer a delightful sight for those eager to embrace the season.

Trees That Steal the Show

For those eager to find the colors, certain trees are the stars of Florida’s fall show. Keep an eye out for the colorful leaves of red maple, sugarberry, persimmon, sweetgum, Florida maple, flowering dogwood, sorrel tree, sassafras, and cypress trees. These are the species most likely to deliver those sought-after autumn hues. While hints of color can be found in South Florida, the most impressive displays are typically concentrated in Northern and Central Florida. A scenic drive along I-75 from Tampa heading north towards Lake City is highly recommended, as this route winds through a region with more rolling terrain and a greater variety of trees. The I-10 corridor also offers fantastic opportunities to spot those classic red, orange, yellow, and purple shades, particularly in the extreme northern parts of the state.

Best Ways to Explore Florida’s Fall Foliage

Exploring Florida’s fall foliage is an adventure best enjoyed up close and personal. Consider a peaceful canoe trip along a river, where the colorful trees lining the banks create a stunning reflection on the water. Hiking trails and local parks are also perfect spots for immersing yourself in the beauty and capturing memorable photos. Driving along quiet, rural roads is another wonderful way to discover pockets of autumn color. For a truly exceptional experience, make your way to Torreya State Park in the Florida Panhandle around early November. This expansive preserve offers breathtaking views of the Apalachicola River from 150-foot bluffs, showcasing a surprising diversity of Florida’s landscape and some of the most colorful fall foliage the state has to offer.
